Star Trek: The Next Generation Action Figures

Customized as the figures Playmates never made!

During the 1990,s, the Playmates corporation followed their success in the original TMNT figure line with a licensed line of figures from Star Trek. Over the next decade, Playmates released a staggering array of characters in 5", 6", 9", and 12" sizes. Even then, many figures were ignored or repeated ad infinitum across the different sizes, so there were plenty of gaps to be filled by the "enterprising" entrepreneur.

  • Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson

as portrayed by Data & Geordi LaForge

During the second year of the Enterprise-D's voyages, Lt. LaForge treats Commander Data to a holodeck experience as his favorite fictional character, Sherlock Holmes, with LaForge accompanying as Doctor Watson. The episode, "Elementary, Dear Data," became a fan favorite almost immediately. Late in the 9" figure run, a Data and Geordi set were released, but no such effort was ever made in the 5" line. I set about to fix that oversight.

The Holmes figure began as PLAYMATES' "Data in dress uniform" figure.

After considerable cutting and filing, a new collar with bow tie was added, trouser cuffs were rebuilt, and a vest front plus jacket lapels rounded out the ensemble.

I then scratched a batwing cape from fabric, a magnifying glass with lens, removable Deerstalker cap, and a Meerschaum pipe. Data's communicator badge (which officers must carry at all times) is inside the lapel of the batwing cloak.

Faithful companion Dr. Watson started life as PLAYMATES' "Geordi in dress uniform" figure.

After even more cutting and filing, yet another new collar with necktie was added, trouser cuffs were rebuilt, and a vest front plus jacket lapels and pockets rounded out the ensemble. I painted on a subtle spatter-mist paint job to simulate textured fabric.

I then vacuformed a bowler hat and scratched a journal with cover and pages (The Journal of Dr. John Watson) that Geordi picks up during the episode.

  • Intendant Kira

    from Star Trek's Mirror Universe

Following the interference of James Kirk a century earlier, the Terran Empire that controlled a mirror image of our universe fell to the combined forces of the Klingon-Cardassian-Bajoran alliance of which Intendant Kira is a key figure (or likes to think she is).

The Intendant began as PLAYMATES' Kira figure. I filed, puttied, and sanded away a lot of detail before installing her ribbon straps, metal alliance insignia, and headband. Finally, I repainted her hand weapon and reattached her Bajoran comm badge.

Note: A year later, PLAYMATES released Intendant Kira as a figure. Mine came first!

  • Counselor Troi in blue duty dress

Frequently during the early seasons of Star Trek: the Next Generation, Counselor Deanna Troi wore a lowcut blue dress for on-duty hours. This costume was never designed on an action figure.

I used a standard PLAYMATES Troi figure. Troi's boots were sanded to remove pant cuffs. Her communicator badge was removed and her collar was sanded smooth. A new lowcut collar was attached as was a crepe skirt. The figure was painted blue. Finally her communicator badge was reattached.

  • Merry Man Worf

During a visit to the Enterprise by the all-powerful Q, the command crew are propelled into a Robin Hood fantasy wherein Picard is Robin and poor Worf is Will Scarlett (to which he responds..."Captain, I must protest! I am NOT a merry man!!!")

Customizations: Worf started out as a standard PLAYMATES Worf figure in duty uniform. His boots were modified into knee boots. His jacket became a tunic with pinhead buttons and a vinyl belt with scabbard. His sleeves became armored cuffs. I added a shoulder cape, toothpick sword and a Sculpey polymer clay hat.
